Ben Tebbs PGA Professional

From an early age it was obvious that Ben would be a sportsman. Excelling at cross country, tennis (no.1 seed at schools level - undefeated) and football (Captain of school and club sides), he was a born leader and motivator on and off the pitch.

However it was golf where Ben found his true vocation and, after a late start, the accolades and trophies came flooding in.

From a beginner at 13 years old, to a 12 handicap in his first year, he went on to win his first scratch junior open at 15, and reached the finals of the prestigious Daily Mail Junior Golf Championship.

After he had finished school Ben knew that he wanted to follow sport and therefore set about obtaining a Diploma in Sports Management, whilst at the same time as playing as much golf as possible.

After graduating he had to choose between going to university or to trying his hand at golf. He then heard that the old PGA qualification was to be changed into a degree in golf. It was an easy decision.

This new qualification would train pros not just to be able to teach and run a professional shop but also how to run a golf club as a whole, from the bottom to the top: course, house and finance.

At the same time, PGA Captain Geoff Cotton was holding interviews nationwide for 3 scholarships to assist with funding for this fantastic but expensive qualification. Ben met with the PGA Committee and was awarded one of only 3 scholarships – which were given to the most promising trainees in the country.

Ben joined Malden Golf Club and undertook his PGA qualification.

It was here that his career would be moulded by the fantastic traditions at the club and three professionals who would assist with his training. On the playing side it was George Howard, possessor of a wonderful short game and dry wit! George Howard was a past leader of the Open Championship. On the playing and professional side it would be Head Professional Robert Hunter, past Surrey PGA Captain and a fine mentor. On the teaching side it would be Jim Christine, a member of the Ryder Cup Committee and “Head of Swing” at the PGA. It was no surprise that Ben thrived under these tutors and played his best golf - achieving three “Top 3” finishes and a Pro-am win in PGA events during this period.

Always a “thinking man’s Pro”, Ben began to realise that during tournament golf he could easily identify faults in swings. It was at this time that he was given the nickname of the 'golf whisperer' - with fellow pros often asking him to 'take a quick look'. Ben would suggest a fix straight away.

Passing with flying colours, Ben has now been a fully qualified PGA Professional for over 14 years.

At the time of passing the new foundation course Ben Tebbs was the highest qualified Golf Professional in the country.

After qualifying Ben wanted to branch out further into other areas in golf, he therefore set up a franchise with Powacaddy to supply and repair motorised golf trollies. Together with Robert Hunter he now runs one of the biggest official service centres in the South East of England.

Never one to stop learning he attends regular swing seminars and recently qualified as a “Rules and Tournaments Official” within the PGA.

A friendly and warm character with a wealth of experience – after playing all over Asia, Europe and the Caribbean - Ben is here to assist with all of your golfing needs.

Geoff Start

'The golf swing is an unnatural movement for most people - Ben's coaching methods together with his detailed follow up video analysis give golfers of all standards a clear insight into how the correct set up and swing plane can be achieved'.
John Stimson

'I played with Ben in a pro am last year and within two minutes he had identified a fundamental fault with my set up and initial takeaway. A half hour lesson and putting into practice his advice, I am now averaging thirty to forty yards further off the tee and more importantly, under control. We are now working on the draw. Ben is extremely patient, he is good company, he doesn’t attempt to alter a swing too much and offers sound advice
Last year I was fortunate to win a major competition, my first after 26 years of membership, which involved qualifying rounds and a 36 hole match play final at MGC. I have no doubt that my success was directly a result of my lesson with Ben Tebbs'

'I have known Ben since I joined Malden Golf Club, I started here 5 years ago off a handicap of 36 and made rapid improvements under Bens supervision. Through his simple but effective teaching that clarifies in easy to understand terms, exactly what I need to improve. I am now off a handicap of 5 and continue to have lessons with Ben in hope of reaching scratch eventually. Ben is very personable and I experienced this first hand when I worked in the pro shop for a week and observed his tireless work ethic all day every day'.
