New Junior Membership Opportunity
Members Only
Diary Event

In the past we have had in excess of 70 junior members, with some excellent golfers graduating from junior membership to become fine upstanding Full Members of Malden Golf Club. Some have also turned Professional with David Clarkson Jnr a good example of this.

But this is the past, and now we face a rebuilding process to get this hugely important part of the club back to full strength. We currently have less than 20 junior members.

So commencing from June 1st in the absence of a member who can act as “Junior Organiser” I have agreed to take on this role for the time being. I have set out the following objectives

1. To grow the junior Membership to 50 children by the end of 2020
2. To have 5-10% of the junior membership girls
3. To host regular junior competitions throughout the year with decent levels of participation
4. To be able to field a junior team in a county team league in 2021/22
5. To be considered a success within the county and to have a reputation for promoting junior golf

To enable us to achieve the objectives set out above firstly we have set about reinstating the practice area to the right of the 8th hole. This will become a dedicated junior/academy coaching area. The direction has been turned around to enable better use of the area. There will be junior summer camps and other coaching sessions carried out here by all the professional coaching staff. These camps will be a paid for service run by the Pro Shop in particular David Clarkson Jnr, the assistant professional will be involved heavily in them.

Secondly we are now offering FREE junior membership to under 14 year olds with a full paying adult (parent/grandparent/legal guardian). This means that you can join your 11 year old for free providing you maintain your Membership also. 14 and over junior fees are currently only £185, so even when they reach that age it’s not a massive jump.

Thirdly we are looking to set some regular junior stableford and medal competitions throughout the summer holidays and beyond. We don’t expect these to suddenly become hugely popular but we hope that with steady growth of the junior section that these prove popular.

Fourthly we are looking to earmark Sunday afternoons, on non competition days between 3-5pm as family play. This means that between 3-5pm on the 1st , 2nd holes , and the practice area you can bring your younger children along (always supervised please) to try their hand at playing a bit of golf from forward markers ( on the 1st and 2nd). The pro shop can lend you a couple of junior clubs to get you started if needs be, and a tube of balls for the practice ground. Your children do not need to be members to come along to this, and there is not an organised activity (ie no bouncy castle or big colourful targets) as such, but you will have access and crucially a right to be there. Please do let other members through if playing a match or playing faster when possible however. Dates of when these are on shall be posted on the website diary.

As part of this plan we are looking for an interested parent to be involved also, this is not urgent as we are only at the beginning of this process but it would be useful to have someone else involved who has a child going through the junior membership at Malden. If interested though then please contact me.

So the question is now, do you have a child or grandchild who is under 14 years of age and would like to become a Member of Malden GC? If so please get in touch and I can send you the relevant forms to get this started. If you have an interested child who is 14 or over then we’d also love to hear from you!
