Fellow Members,

Good news! Golf Shake, the on-line community for golfers, has just placed Malden in the Top 50 Courses for Condition in the UK. The ranking is based on thousands of independent reviews of golf courses throughout the country that are submitted to the website. This is a great achievement and I’ll be including more details of the listing in my Newsletter at the end of the week.

But despite this accolade, we do not intend to rest on our laurels.

You will probably remember that we recently undertook a Members Survey part of which was to help us plan for the future development of our golf course. The results of the survey that related to the course covered observations about the maintenance of the greens, the condition of tees, fairways and bunkers, the layout and playability of some holes and the quality and location of course furniture including ball cleaners, bins and signage. The Green Committee has spent the last few months carefully assessing all the factors that might contribute to achieving further improvements to the course. As a result of their work, I can now present our Golf Course Five Year Development Plan ( please click the link below).

This is a working document and it will inevitably evolve over time. It is, however, a statement of intent. The golf course is our most important asset and we want to ensure it is presented in as good a condition as we can achieve. Of course, our ability to implement many of the changes that we are proposing will depend on sustaining the Club’s positive financial position and ensuring that our Green Team continues to have the resources it needs to maintain the course to the highest standards. The plan is also dependent on the feedback we receive from our members now and in the future.

So please take some time to look at the PowerPoint presentation or PDF document by following the links below.

Last but by no means least, I am really pleased to announce that we have appointed Scott Weale as our new Head Greenkeeper. He will take over from Kris Durrant in February. Scott joined us as Kris’s deputy 18 months ago having worked previously at The Wisley. Along with Kris, Scott has been instrumental in many of the improvements we have seen on the golf course over the last year and has had a significant amount of in-put into drawing up the Five Year Plan. During his recent interview, the Green Committee was impressed with Scott’s ideas for maintaining and developing the quality of our golf course and his commitment to implementing them over the coming years. He also ensures we have continuity as the work on the irrigation system, the refurbished bunkers, the new 14th tee and various other important projects are completed during the next few months. Congratulations Scott.
